It all started when she was six weeks old…

Posted in Camp life

At just six weeks old, Bek Mihill attended her first SU QLD camp. Now, 21 years later, she’s camp director.

“I love kids! I have a passion for young people and I love going on camps, sitting with a small group of girls, and talking to them about life, school and God,” Bek says.

“After spending years watching my Dad directing camps, and being a leader myself for many years, becoming a camp director just seemed like the natural next step for me.”

SU QLD camps is in the Mihill family blood – they’ve been involved for 38 years. “Camps are a part of our family’s culture, with Dad directing, Mum in the kitchen cooking and my younger sister, Hannah, also leading. It’s great to serve as a family and honour God in this way,” she says.

“All the camp leaders have become like family. I’ve gained pseudo aunties and uncles and have made friends for life.”

Last year, Bek co-directed a camp for Grade 5-7 students, called Loop Spring. It was a huge success with many memorable moments, including when the entire mountain lost power one night. But Bek and her team met the challenge and ended the night doing activities by candlelight.

“I can’t imagine my life without SU QLD camps, and I hope to one day pass the Mihill family camp culture onto my own family,” she says.

Thousands of passionate people volunteer at SU QLD camps every year and we are so grateful for the time they give.

Good on you Bek for stepping up as director.
