Students ‘tri’ out Camp Cooroibah!

Caboolture Special School sent their largest ever team of 41 senior students to compete in the Noosa Special Triathlon last year.

But before the team set off on their epic adventure, they spent three days preparing for the triathlon at SU QLD’s Camp Coorooibah, as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award Adventurous Journey.

Caboolture Special School’s then physical education teacher, Ben Byrne, says the camp was “a story of achievement”.

“Students prepared for and practised being away from home, being in unfamiliar environments and engaging in their community.  This included sleeping in cabins, cycling and swimming at our bush camp at Camp Cooroibah,” Ben said.

The students also had a barbecue and disco with Maryborough Special School, and explored nearby Noosa Main Beach and Noosaville in their Tri Team Shirts.

“SU QLD’s Camp Cooroibah is such a unique facility that is ideally suited to the team’s needs,” Ben said.

“Not only do the number and variety of accommodation options allow the school to cater to the range of students’ needs, it is an accessible site for students in wheelchairs, its space and tracks cater well to large and diverse groups, giving each group space whilst being safely supervised and engaging in activities that can cater to high needs and high ability students.

“Other schools say to us, ‘Your school brings everyone!’ and this is in a large part only possible thanks to the SU Cooroibah campsite.”

Caboolture Special School chaplain, Angus Gowan, said the students loved their time at Camp Cooroibah.

“This camp is something that the young people in the school really look forward to when they reach years 10, 11, and 12,” chappy Angus said.

“This is a great camp area for getting young people to work together in teamwork, and you have the freedom to run the whole event yourself.  The school loves the camp and we’ll be back next year!”
